Phillipa Reed Massage Therapist

Specialised Postpartum Massage Therapy

Soothe, release, & reconnect with your body in a way that feels safe, supported & nurtured

Your body has just done an incredible job of growing, birthing, and now caring for your precious baby. Yet, these amazing milestones can sometimes bring physical strain, tension, and discomfort.

Postpartum massage, also known as postnatal massage is specially designed to soothe post pregnancy back pain, ease joint stiffness, and release tension from “feeding shoulders.” Beyond relieving the common aches and pains of childbirth, it offers a dedicated space to promote deep relaxation and restore your overall wellbeing.

When you book a session with Phillipa, you receive specialist postpartum massage therapy to help new mums feel cared for and supported.

Postpartum massage is an effective and holistic approach for the many adjustments to motherhood

  • Relieves Muscle & Joint Pain: Carrying a newborn, feeding, and frequent bending take a toll on your upper back, shoulders, neck, and lower back. Massage directly targets these tense areas to release tight muscles and improve posture.
  • Reduces Swelling: Gentle bodywork and manual lymphatic drainage encourage healthy fluid balance and increase circulation to help flush excess water retention.
  • Eases Headaches & Nerve Discomfort: By releasing deep tension in the neck and shoulders, massage helps alleviate tension headaches and compressed nerve discomfort.
  • Supports Milk Production: For mums seeking an increase in their breast milk supply, massage can enhance circulation and boosts the necessary hormones to help facilitate flow.
  • Balances Hormones: The postpartum body experiences constant hormonal fluctuations. Massage therapy supports your body’s natural effort to regulate and balance these changes.
  • Reduces Anxiety & Depression: Many new parents experience the “baby blues” or postpartum depression. Massage helps decrease stress markers, helping to soothe anxious feelings and elevate your mood.
  • Promotes Better Sleep: Postpartum fatigue is intense. Massage increases deep (delta) brain waves, helping you fall asleep faster and achieve higher-quality rest during those brief sleep windows.

When Is It Safe to Have a Postpartum Massage

Following childbirth, your body needs dedicated time to heal and adapt to physiological and hormonal changes.

  • General Guidance: Current guidelines recommend waiting 6 weeks before receiving a massage. However, as every recovery journey is unique, timing depends on individual circumstances. If you are unsure, please consult your midwife or GP for personalised advice.
  • C-Section Deliveries: In the case of a C-section birth, physical recovery may take a little longer. It is generally recommended waiting until you have completed your official postpartum checkup before booking your session.
  • C-Section Scar Treatment: It is advised to wait until 8-10 weeks postpartum, or until your incision is fully closed and cleared by your postpartum check.

Benefits of C-Section Scar Release

  • Adhesion reduction: Frees up tight fascia and tissue layers stuck to underlying muscle.
  • Symptom relief: Eases numbness, hypersensitivity, pulling, and localised back or hip pain.
  • Appearance: Reduces raised areas and softens lumpy or puckered tissue.
